Can I have grapefruit when I am taking blood-pressure lowering, cholesterol-lowering or immunosuppressant medications?

Dr Rebecca Luong

No. Grapefruit, pomelo and Seville orange segments/juices/marmalades contains compounds that can increase drug availability. One of the known compounds, called furanocoumarins, inhibits the small intestine enzyme cytochrome P450-3A4 which normally metabolises the drug. This results in increased absorption with potentially toxic overdoses of blood-pressure lowering, cholesterol-lowering and immunosuppressive medications. In addition, grapefruit and pomegranate interact with other drugs.

Tip? Do not have grapefruit, pomelo and Seville oranges when having those medications. Read medication labels and ask your health professional for more information! There is a vast variety of fruit so aim to reach your 2 serves of fruit today :)
